How it's figured (index_v1)
- The Cownty 5-wt Index (version index_v1) is one number for what 500–599 lb steer calves brought at Panhandle-area sale barns this week.
- Barns: the seven local barns with USDA AMS Market News auction reports: Wildorado (report 3365), Dalhart (1953), Tulia (1954), Woodward (1828), Beaver (3794), Clovis (1781) and Dodge City (1889). The OKC and Joplin benchmark barns are not included.
- Week: Saturday through Friday. The index is dated the Friday. Each barn counts once, using its latest sale in that week. A barn with no USDA report that week is left out and listed.
- Number: for each barn, Cownty takes the head-weighted average price ($/cwt) of all USDA-reported Medium and Large 1 and 1-2 steer lots weighing 500–599 lb. The index is the average of those barn averages weighted by head, which equals total dollars divided by total hundredweight-priced head across every lot. Classes with fewer than 3 head at a barn are left out.
- No index is published for a week with fewer than 4 barns reporting. Nothing is interpolated or estimated.
- Change: the difference from the previous week's index. History goes back as far as the stored USDA reports.
- This method is fixed. Any change gets a new version name (index_v2) and a note on this page; old values are never silently recalculated.
