About Cownty
Cownty is an independent project, built in the Texas Panhandle and run by the Cownty team. It turns public USDA, state and weather data into plain county pages and short text alerts.
What Cownty is, and isn't
- It is a free-during-the-pilot service that shows public data for every county in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and New Mexico, with the source and date on every number.
- It isn't affiliated with any sale barn, buyer, seller, lender or government agency, including USDA.
- It isn't advice. Prices are past sales, not quotes. FSA, RMA, NRCS and the states decide eligibility and deadlines.
- It never sells or shares your phone number. Text STOP anytime.
Where the data comes from
Sale barn prices from USDA AMS Market News reports; drought from the U.S. Drought Monitor; LFP, disaster designations, CRP and payment totals from FSA files; burn bans from the Texas A&M Forest Service, Oklahoma Forestry Services and New Mexico Forestry Division (Kansas: county burning rules and NWS fire-weather alerts); weather alerts from the National Weather Service; screwworm zones from the Texas Animal Health Commission. See every source, its last load and status.
How alerts and numbers are checked
- Every number links to its official file and shows the date that file carries. Missing data shows "—" with the reason; nothing is estimated or filled in.
- Every program alert (LFP list, disaster designation, CRP haying) carries the link to the official file it came from.
- No text, email or post goes out without a person approving it. Unapproved items expire and never send late, and one switch pauses everything.
- Barn price averages are head-weighted from USDA-reported lots. Classes with fewer than 3 head are hidden. Price cards show one barn at a time, and reports name a barn only for its top average or another favorable fact.
- When something is wrong, it's fixed and logged publicly on the corrections page. If a wrong alert went out, a correction goes to the same people, after a person approves it.
